First Step Campaign
What is First Step? PDF Print E-mail

The first step towards anything is always the hardest to take. Often people do not know what their first step could be, how to take it, or they are not even aware that such a step is necessary. As the world faces unprecedented challenges in the 21st century, tackling these challenges will require as many people take action as possible. The First Step campaign aims to highlight how people all over the world – young and old, emerging and established figures – take action on critical issues that matter to them.

People have great power and energy; the pulse and the impulse of change and freedom. Let us embrace and celebrate the stories of this energy, these narratives of change.

- What was your First Step in taking action to create a positive change in the society?

Realizing that my responsibility extends beyond myself and those closest to me, and that by ignoring violations against other people you are just as guilty as the offender.

My first step was to not look away when witnessing bullying in primary school, and to treat people as I want them to treat me, with respect and consideration.

My most recent step was applying to work for a Canadian

NGO known as Project Hope in Nablus, Palestine. I was hired as an art/photography teacher for the summer months.

PH is a non-profit organization with an aim to support children otherwise denied basic rights and services here in Palestine. They provide educational and recreational activities, medical and humanitarian relief and practical training that can empower youth with hope and skills for the future. I am very proud to volunteer for them.

What was your First Step in taking action to create a positive change in the society?

My most recent First Step has been leaving my life in Edinburgh, Scotland to travel to Nablus, Palestine to use my skills as an artist to give art classes to children. By coming here I am supporting Project Hope to continue to provide essential educational and peace opportunities to the children of Nablus and surrounding areas. It is invaluable to the communities that these classes can be offered by local and international volunteers, and I feel that international presence is very important to show that there are people outside of Palestine who care about what goes on here with regards to the ongoing occupation. Also, we can act as observers to report on the situation and continue active work on Palestinian issues when we return to our countries.
